Special Community Projects
St. Paddy's Day 5K
The Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise, in cooperation with West Suburban Irish, hosts a 5K Race, Run, or Walk each year in March.
Participation in this event is a great way to join into the St. Paddy’s Day Spirit. Proceeds from this event are used to provide health related services to those in need.
Naperville Sunrise Rotary, in partnership with the Water Street District and the City of Naperville, annually presents the NaperLights event. The event is sponsored to bring cheer and festivities to our community during the holiday season.
During this event, the Water Street District is converted into a holiday lights extravaganza with a combination of holiday displays.
Drop-in Dinner Program
When Mary Borland’s son Chris was diagnosed 25 years ago with schizoaffective disorder she searched for a place for him to find friends. Naperville community did not offer any social activities for parents with young adults who suffered with Mental illness. A few of them gathered in the old library on Washington Sunday evenings to have chips and soda.
She approached the Park District to see if any locations were available to serve dinners and so began the Drop-In Dinners at the Rubin Center on Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm. At that time, Mary and three other parents, prepared and served warm meals to the group. Since then, the other parents have all passed on, but their children still attend.
For some of the guests it’s the best meal they have all week. Some of the young adults have subsidized apartments, some live at home or in group homes. Mary’s Drop-in Dinners started with 20 guests, and now they have anywhere from 35 to 40 guests. On holidays the numbers swell to anywhere from 50 to 60 guests.
Naperville Sunrise Rotary club provides a meal and helps serve every third Wednesday of the month. After dinner there is an activity organized by Benet Academy students an sponsored by WDSRA.
